Liz Avelar, Co-producer, Motion Pix Ent., LLC, Invited To “SA Gridiron Show” Annual Fundraising Event For College Scholarships
Every year the Society of Professional Journalist (SPJ) produce a high-profile event titled, “SA Gridiron Show”. The purpose of the event is to raise scholarship funds for journalism students needing college financial aid. Here’s an official description of the special event:
“Share an evening of rollicking good times as San Antonio media types poke fun at local and national news personalities and events in skits, songs and videos. No holds barred, raw, bust-your-gut laughs. Definitely adult entertainment. Think “Saturday Night Live” meets “Corynation.”
One of the highlights of the show is the presentation of the Most-Panned Award, which is given to a local news maker who has garnered the most negative media coverage in the past year, as voted upon by the cast. It’s especially rewarding when the award recipient is in the audience and comes onstage to receive the coveted cast-iron fry pan.
The Gridiron show’s name comes from the annual dinner presented by the Gridiron Club, the oldest and one of the most prestigious journalistic organizations in Washington, DC. Membership in the club, which was established in 1885, is by invitation only. The club’s dinner features satirical music and skits by members and politicians.
Last year the SPJ raised $12,000 for students.”
Liz says she wanted to support the show because,
“When I was in college I received scholarships from the Hispanic Scholarship Fund HSP, and I wouldn’t have been able to focus on my studies without that kind of financial help. So I want to do all I can to help The Society of Professional Journalist SA and the student chapter. I feel journalist are central to preserving our personal freedom, provoking our critical thinking & debate, and keeping us informed. It’s an honorable professional and the Gridiron is a worthy cause we should all support & appreciate.”
